I don't know if the computers at the ranch are set up to handle audio but I'll mention a couple of sites in this connection. My own access suffers from hardware limitations. Clearly the development of this realm of the internet is way behind what has happened with print (or should I say, static visual imagery) but this isn't going to last for long. The technology is already in place, it just hasn't been adapted, distributed or utilized with much diligence. But there are some stellar examples of what can be done. Maybe you've already connected to Latin radio through zonalatina.com or heard the talk Jennifer Harbury gave on "About Books" in the archive at c-span.org
Compact Disc (Record Stores) here you're going to find the most amazing record store I have run across in some time. (I say "record" but obviously my language is out of date.) The owner/proprietor is a Latin music fan, has a program on an Austin, TX station, and put together an on-line store that must be unique. His specialty is Latin--meaning Spanish American--and he has a whole line from the Hispanic Caribbean and Mexico, straight down the continent. Many of the listings will allow you to hear a tiny audio clip. There are some excellent pages of explanation about the various styles and forms within particular regions, in turn linked to the catalogue pages where you'll find these audio samples. Currently featured as an "emerging artist" is Susana Baca, whose music is the best stuff I have heard in years and years.
Bibliography
not long ago I mentioned the Jamaican cultural theorist Stuart Hall. At this site you'll find a bibliography of his printed work and a few links to interviews or works that are on line. For some time I have been running across other references to on-line Hall materials but virtually every link proved to be a dead-end. The person maintaining this web site indicates that there have been problems with copyright and I suspect this is why much of what might have once been out there had been pulled. Anyway, here is a burgeoning bibliography of Hall's work. He's a pretty interesting fellow and one of a couple of dozen philosophers/theorists/critics whose ideas are guiding contemporary intellectuals. You might find it interesting to see what one of these lives looks like on paper.
Author Foundations
Francisco Herrera Luque died in 1991. His family and friends have created this web site to announce events coordinated by the foundation established in his name and to promote his published works. None of his writing has been translated into English. My impression is that the site was primarily designed for local purposes but it's one example (albeit posthumous) of how the internet may alter the reach of the Latin writers and intellectuals. There are a handful of other examples like this at the lanic.utexas.edu site but for the time being not many of these web pages are devoted to living writers.
