Essays/Book Reviews this site is the jumping off point for The New York Review of Books, Granta, and some other publication that I've already forgotten. To date The New York Review of Books has only archived three or four years, however they're at work on the full collection. Their search engine is powerful, the essays have always been exceptionally good and for the time being it's free. See a review of both Guevara's Motorcycle Diaries and a recent biography of Che, by Christopher Hitchens.
Interview/Excerpts/Biography this is an on-line publication featuring fiction and poetry that singles out particular writers and groups together web materials about them. One of their featured writers is Ilan Stavans.
Journalists/Writers this is the address of the home page for the Committee to Protect Journalists, one of several press organizations that draw attention to what is clearly a dangerous trade if working in Latin America. (I think I've footnoted a report at this site but there's more.) Under their publications you'll see listed a book titled Attacks on the Press or something like that. The annual report seems to be the bulk of this book, if not its entirety. There's plenty of blow-by-blow material listed by country. Two special reports in the Americas section--on Cuban journalism and the recruitment of journalists by the CIA--are interesting reading. Homero Aridjis, a Mexican poet, was recently elected to head PEN International (See Sam Dillon, "For PEN's New President, a Focus on Latin America," New York Times, September 23, 1997). Anyway, this address is for the American Center, one of about a half dozen PEN centers worldwide.
Human Rights
this site is under "construction," or maybe it would be more accurate to state it's under "reconstruction." Whoever is responsible is maintaining a bulletin board that's tracking several prominent human rights cases in Guatemala (Harbury/Bámaca and Ortiz among them), as well as providing more general information about the ongoing war--peace treaties notwithstanding. You'll find Harbury posting messages here. It's sad to realize that a site like this falls into a category under which the home pages for Lori Berenson or the Vanished Gallery can also be grouped. All of these sites are private efforts and not the work of human rights organizations or other institutions.
